This item is heavy-duty metal with plastic ends, just like the original. What came apart in the original, of course, was the plastic end pieces, and I'm sure that if my old treadmill lives long enough, the same thing will happen to this part. If you're inclined to trade up to a better machine, definitely do that. I preferred to get more mileage out of my old machine and had already invested in another expensive replacement part.
